Hot Topic: Mo Money Mo Problems by Amandine C.
As I am absolutely sure we all have heard by now, on January 28, Jussie Smollett, the Empire actor who plays Jamal Lyon, was attacked in Chicago after getting some food from a local Subway sandwich shop. Jussie claims the attack happened when 2 men approached him, beat him, yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him, and then put his head in a noose. Social media went into a complete frenzy of support with people tweeting and posting on IG and FB. And rightfully so - this is a terrible thing to have happened, and we should support him...right?
Well, unfortunately, supporting Jussie has quickly become a debatable topic. Since his story has spread like butter on bread throughout the media, more and more details have come into light about his attack and Jussie Smollett is getting dragged… absolutely dragged!
Let’s go a bit into the details.
Smollett says he was attacked
January 28, and then the police released information about the persons of interest, who were found to be two Nigerian brothers that had worked on the set of Empire as extras (hmmm, a bit fishy if you ask me). Not long after this, Jussie made an appearance in West Hollywood where he thanked people for their support. Then, on the 13th of February, the perps were caught in their tracks. You’d think that they’d be thrown in the slammer and the story would be over… Well, it turns out that this story had more behind it than what had been revealed (detective skills: on).
On Valentines Day, Smollett appeared on Good Morning America where he was interviewed about the attack, where he expressed his sadness about how people were starting to attack him about the validity of his story. The very next day, the police released his attackers on the grounds of "lack of evidence", and suspicion that Smollett was involved in the attack. HIS OWN ATTACK. Whoa... Wait, you mean to tell me that he potentially had this whole little scheme PLANNED and that this was just for the attention?! Wait, let’s keep going because....WHAT?
According to CNN, the Chicago police believe that Smollett may have orchestrated the attack, but the police said that they didn’t have evidence to support those claims… so who are we to believe? As of now, many of the celebrities and public figures who showed Smollett support has since taken down their posts of support or have made statements about “reserving judgment” on the situation.
I don’t know about you, but I’m absolutely torn about this whole situation. Part of me is Team Jamal, who has loved him since his “Keep Your Money” days and was ALL for it when he dissed Luscious by coming out in his “You’re So Beautiful” performance on Empire. The other part of me isn’t surprised that yet another celebrity might be going the farthest lengths in order to remain in the limelight. What’s your take? Do you think he really did plan this out to stay relevant? Do you think he’s a genuine victim?
Well, since all that stuff happened, the situation has unfortunately escalated greatly in a negative way. As more evidence came about to prove that the two alleged attackers of Smollett were not the ones who initiated the attack, Smollett has been charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report. Tsk tsk.
As more and more details come into the light, Smollett continues to get DRAGGED! The Chicago Superintendent said that Smollett had faked all this because he wanted to get paid more on Empire. That ended up biting him in the butt because rumor has it that Jussie/Jamal is now no longer a part of Empire so he won’t be getting paid a single dime.
This is SO much to digest, right? I mean, can you believe that Jamal, everybody's favorite Lyon is out here lyin'? And because of it, he might not even be part of the show anymore? Our hopes and dreams for him, our thoughts and theories, all the conspiracies, DOWN THE DRAIN. As with many problems in the world, this one is all about money. As B.I.G. said, “Mo Money, Mo Problems,” and because of his greed, Jussie encountered a whole domino-effect of problems. This goes to show how we need to appreciate what we have no matter how much or little it may be because one day, you can go to get a Subway sandwich, and BOOM - it can all be taken away.
Even since writing this post as of Friday, March 8 he got a 16-count felony indictment just for lying to the police with a false police report! And the drama still continues...
